From Mamaw’s Biscuits to Blackberry Farm and Beyond: Chef David Rule’s Journey
Chef David Rule shares his journey to building a powerful hospitality brand with three concept kitchens in Sevierville, TN. Known for his innovative restaurant concepts and culinary expertise, Chef Rule shares his story, highlighting the pivotal moments that shaped his career. From the early days in his grandmother's kitchen to the high-stakes culinary world of Blackberry Farm, David's path is a testament to persistence, creativity, and a deep appreciation for quality ingredients.
David's passion for the culinary arts began in high school, working at a local restaurant called Talley's 411. It was here that he discovered a love for the restaurant business. His big break came when he secured a coveted position at Blackberry Farm, a prestigious culinary establishment, and under the mentorship of esteemed chefs Josh Feathers and Steve Ledbetter, David honed his skills, developing a profound appreciation for quality ingredients and meticulous techniques.

However, David's career wasn't without its challenges. The 2008-2009 financial crisis forced him to leave Blackberry Farm, and subsequent issues led to setbacks at Walnut Kitchen in Maryville. Yet, David's resilience shone through as he teamed up with developer Austin Williams to create The Appalachian in downtown Sevierville, the first of three sought after concept restaurants in the area. Their goal was to offer a refined dining experience that appealed to both tourists and locals, far beyond the typical amusements of the area. The Appalachian, with its contemporary design and seasonally inspired dishes prepared over a wood-burning hearth, has left guests – including Dolly Parton and the host of this podcast – thoroughly satiated. The initial success of The Appalachian led to Mountain Hospitality’s launch and the doors opening at both Trotter’s Whole Hog BBQ and The Pines Downtown, an event space and restaurant, which is in the very same building Dolly first performed in!
Beyond his culinary pursuits, Chef Rule's personal life is equally enriching. From his roots in Maryville to his love for scratch cooking inspired by his grandmother, David's story is a testament to dedication and passion. He even shares his bourbon recommendations: Four Roses Single Barrel for daily enjoyment, Green River for gatherings, and Elmer T. Lee for special celebrations. Through Southern Character, listeners get an insightful peek into the life of Chef David Rule, a culinary artist who continues to shape East Tennessee’s culinary landscape with his commitment to excellence, innovation, and community. Be sure to check out The Appalachian’s website, Instagram, and Facebook pages for more updates and plan your visit to experience the exceptional cuisine firsthand.
