Hilton Head: My Favorite Southern Island Escape
Hilton Head Island is my personal paradise. I have visited the island dozens of times since I was a child, and, after all of these years, it remains my go-to vacation spot. With its pristine beaches, world-class golf courses, and charming atmosphere, it's the perfect place to unwind and recharge. And, it’s an ideal choice for a multigenerational family looking for a vacation everyone can enjoy. With hundreds of restaurants, miles of trails for biking, endless family activities, and accommodations for every type of vacation goer, Hilton Head is an ideal Southern vacation spot. Let me share some of my favorites on this coastal gem.
A Taste of Hilton Head
No trip to Hilton Head is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. One of my absolute must-visits is Ela's on the Water. The waterfront setting is simply beautiful, and the seafood is always fresh and expertly prepared. I'm particularly fond of their shrimp and grits, and the live music adds to the laid-back, elegant vibe.
For a more casual atmosphere, Fishcamp on Broad Creek is a delightful option. Their Lowcountry boil is a feast for the senses, and the outdoor seating provides a lovely view of the creek. Their oyster selection is always mind blowing, offering fresh, crisp, and delicious choices. Plus, with their wide variety of offerings, it’s a perennial favorite of my kids. Another must-try is Michael Anthony's, where the Italian cuisine never disappoints. Their Tagliatelle alla Bolognese is a classic, and the wine list is impressive. Plus, the service here is always friendly and knowledgeable.
If you're looking for something a bit different, Charlie's L'Etoile Verte (Green Star) offers a farm-to-table experience with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Their fish dishes are my favorites, but their vegetarian and vegan options are also surprisingly delicious. Plus, they offer a more upscale dining experience than most other restaurants on the island, making it a great place for date night. And, for a true taste of Southern Italy, Nunzio is a gem, serving up delicious dishes. Chef and owner Nunzio Patruno’s love of authentic and creative Italian cuisine and outstanding wines are clearly represented on the menu and in the restaurant’s warm service.
And, I can’t write about HHI without confessing my love for the legendary Salty Dog Cafe. The cafe offers award-winning crab legs, amazing sandwiches, pasta dishes, burgers, and my personal favorite – the hushpuppies with homemade honey butter. Their food is delicious, but I’d argue that the atmosphere is an equal draw – lively, laidback, and so much fun. It’s the quintessential beach hangout.
Exploring the Island
Clearly a draw of the island is its breathtaking coastline. Hilton Head has more than 12 miles of uninterrupted sand beaches ideal for biking, strolling, and building sand castles. And, while the public and private beaches are certainly beautiful, what I love is the island’s overall feel of small-town tranquility. Hilton Head has stringent aesthetic guidelines for all construction and restrictions on light and motorized watersports. Because of these laws, sound and light pollution are drastically reduced, offering visitors the perfect view of the night skies and a quaint impression around even the island’s newest developments.
One of the highlights of Hilton Head is picturesque Harbour Town. With its colorful shops, playground, charming architecture, and iconic lighthouse, it's the perfect place to spend an afternoon in the Sea Pines development. Be sure to check out the many boutiques offering everything from upscale fashion to beachwear to souvenirs.
Hilton Head has a remarkable history, and I love the Gullah/Geechee culture that’s represented around the island. You can explore the island’s protected environments and heritage at the Coastal Discovery Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate on a beautiful 68-acre property. They offer both land and water excursions.
For a dose of green space when you’ve had your fill of the beach, head to Chaplin Community Park. This expansive public park offers walking trails, playgrounds, soccer and baseball fields, basketball courts, and picnic pavilions making it a great spot for families. My boys have spent hours enjoying this park, and it’s a must visit when we’re on the island.
Shopping enthusiasts will love Shelter Cove. This open-air shopping center boasts a variety of upscale stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. It's a great place to find unique gifts or simply enjoy some window shopping.
Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the wildlife experiences on Hilton Head. The dolphin tours offer a chance to enjoy the coast from the ocean while enjoying encounters with some of the most intelligent and beautiful creatures on earth. If fishing is your thing, there’s plenty of opportunity on the island. Whether you’re a solo fisherman or chartering a group deep-sea fishing excursion, you’ll find everything from Amberjack to Grouper in the waters nearby. If you’re visiting Hilton Head Island from May through October, you just might luck out and see endangered loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings, or their tracks, in the sand. I also enjoy joining a trail ride from Lawton Stables. The horses are gentle and lovingly cared-for, and I enjoy experiencing the Lowcountry by riding through the forests of the 600-acre Sea Pines Forest Preserve.
Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or culinary delights, Hilton Head has something to offer everyone. It's my go-to destination for escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immersing myself in the island’s charm and laid-back elegance.
