The Height of Happiness in Highlands: Eat, Sip, and Explore
I’ve fallen in love with Highlands, North Carolina—a small, quaint mountain town sitting at over 4,000 feet in elevation. Each season brings its own unique charm, from the snowy winter scenes to the stunning fall foliage. There’s something magical about the crisp air and peaceful vibe that you just don’t get in lower-elevation areas of the state. In the spring and summer, it’s never too hot, making it the perfect place to escape the heat and just breathe.
Even though it’s a small town, Highlands is full of life, with great bars, restaurants, and plenty of places to stay. Old Edwards Inn and Spa might be the most famous spot, and I totally get why people love it. With its historic charm dating back to 1878 and a reputation for luxury, it’s a fantastic choice for a getaway. I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying their members-only brunch—there’s nothing like their creamy cheese grits and homemade biscuits. The whole place just oozes elegance and Southern hospitality.
But if you’re looking for something a little more low-key, I discovered Highlander Mountain House on a recent trip, and it’s such a gem. It’s cozy and quaint, with a fantastic tavern called The Ruffed Grouse Tavern where you can enjoy cocktails by the fire. On a last-minute trip, I stumbled upon their sister property, the Outpost Inn, and it was the perfect stay. The rooms are beautifully renovated, and it’s just a short walk from downtown Highlands. It’s now one of my favorite spots in town to stay when I want to feel more connected to the local vibe.
Satisfying My Sweet Tooth and Savory Cravings
Highlands has some incredible food, too. One of my absolute favorite stops is Edelweiss, owned and operated by Pastry Chef, Chocolatier, and Confectioner Oksana Shchelgachova. This pastry café is a must-visit if you’re in town. I couldn’t resist their Highlands Acorn—it’s a luscious, creamy chocolate filling surrounded by a milk chocolate shell, topped with chopped nuts. Honestly, it’s a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth.
For dinner, I always make sure to stop by Four65 for pizza. Their pizzas are delicious, and the salads and drinks are the perfect way to end a day of exploring. There’s also The Stubborn Mule, where I recently had drinks with friends. Their key lime pie was to die for, the perfect sweet treat after a long day in the mountains.
Adventures in the Outdoors
I’m not just about food, though. Highlands is an adventurer’s paradise. Hiking here is next level. Whiteside Mountain offers some of the best views you can find, and even though there’s an official trail, I was lucky enough to be invited to a private neighborhood trail with a stunning vista. Trust me, any hike in Highlands is worth it, whether you’re taking in the panoramic views or soaking in the natural beauty of the area.
And if you’re into waterfalls, Dry Falls is a must-see. It’s easy to get to—just off the road as you enter Highlands—and you can actually walk behind the falls without getting drenched. The 75-foot waterfall flows over a cliff, and it’s such a beautiful sight that I make sure to stop by every time I visit.
Events Worth Planning Around
If you’re planning a trip this fall, you can’t miss the Highlands Food and Wine Festival. Running from November 7-10, 2024, this festival brings together foodies and wine lovers from all over, and it’s one of the best ways to experience the culinary delights of the area. I’ve been before, and it’s a highlight of the season—amazing food, world-class wines, and that crisp mountain air. What more could you ask for?
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re here to eat, explore, or simply relax, Highlands never disappoints. I’ve been lucky enough to visit several times, and each trip leaves me wanting more. The mix of Southern charm, adventure, and delicious food keeps me coming back, and I can’t wait for my next mountain escape.
