The Retire Southern Team’s Top Picks of 2024
Happy New Year from all of us at Retire Southern!
In closing out 2024 we nostalgically looked back on a year filled with incredible stories, personal experiences, and moments focused on capturing the essence of the authentic South. To memorialize the inaugural year of Retire Southern, our team members each chose their favorite article from 2024 that they felt truly embraced what we are all about—helping our community of like-minded Southern Characters live with purpose, follow their compass, and retire like they mean it. We are thrilled to continue this journey into 2025!
1.Gregg Russell: The Pied Piper of Harbour Town
Lauren’s favorite article for the Southern Character podcast featured Gregg Russell, best known for his performances for children under an old oak tree inside of Sea Pines Resort in Harbour Town, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Gregg openly shares his personal journey to calling Hilton Head home and insights on living an intentional, meaningful life.
“My family has been going to Hilton Head every July since the 1970s, and my history with the island goes back to being dubbed ‘the beachcrawler’ as a baby. I’ve personally sat under that Liberty Oak many, many times. This podcast episode will inspire and touch anyone who listens, but especially if they’ve watched Gregg Russell perform with the special people in their lives. What an incredible legacy!”
2. 48 Hours in Nola: A Tour De Force
James selected 48 Hours in Nola: A Tour de Force as his top pick for 2024 in which he highlights more than a few of his favorite spots to eat, drink, and be merry in one of the South’s most iconic destinations.
“There’s no place like Nola. I lived there 25 years and still consider it my home. When people ask me where I’m from I don’t say, “Atlanta” (no disrespect). This city has a soul and swagger unlike any other. And while a single article can’t capture it all, this covers the basics. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, an introvert or extrovert, I promise there’s something there for you. I want people who go to have such an incredible experience that they can’t wait to go back. Trust me when I say, if you are not having a good time in Nola, you’re doing it wrong!”
3. Exploring Lexington, Kentucky: From the Railbird Music Festival to Culinary Delights
Mallory’s favorite piece celebrates the rolling hills of Kentucky and the vibrant spirit of Lexington. Her guide to the Railbird Music Festival is perfect for anyone who loves bluegrass, bourbon, and the rich traditions of the Bluegrass State.
“My first visit to Kentucky blew me away. I love the excuse of a music festival or special event to pull me to a personally unexplored part of the country, and Railbird Music Festival had a phenomenal lineup with their music and a fun and friendly crowd. The city of Lexington stole my heart with its cute downtown, delicious restaurants, and fun bar scene. It’s a town that I definitely plan to revisit, though next time I want to see a horse race and travel the Bourbon Trail. I hope this article inspires others to visit this Southern gem.”
4.The Height of Happiness in Highlands: Eat, Sip, and Explore
Ashleigh chose The Height of Happiness in Highlands as her favorite article of 2024, celebrating the charm and beauty of this quaint North Carolina mountain town she loves to escape to.
“Highlands, North Carolina, has a magic all its own. From its crisp mountain air to its cozy inns and incredible local spots like Edelweiss and Four65, it’s the perfect escape. This nearly 150-year-old town still charms with its rich history, stunning views, and endless adventures. Writing about it felt like sharing a little piece of heaven.”
5. A Tennessean’s Love/Hate Relationship with Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge
Andrea’s choice reflects her knack for capturing the quirks and charm of Tennessee. Her guide to Gatlinburg paints a vivid picture of this iconic mountain town and offers a mix of humor and heartfelt storytelling.
“Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg hold such special places in my heart. There is so much down-home charm paired with so much garish tourism. Whether I’m battling the crowds on the strip or spending time in front of the fireplace at a rustic cabin, I’ve never regretted a single moment I’ve spent in that area. I was thrilled to write this article to shine a little light on the magic of Dolly’s hometown and to lament the challenges that happen when the whole world discovers your favorite hidden gem”
